SISTER ACT :BACK IN THE HABIT

The movie uses some codes and conventions expected of a comedy as there are creative costumes used in the opening sequence. This is used in order to entertain the audience which is the main factor of the movie due to the genre. This opening sequence was used in this film in order to amuse the audience and to keep them interested in the movie. The use of costumes is brilliantly used to achieve the purpose of the movie as there is variety of them with each one having a different meaning of what is being portrayed in the scene.

The facial expression helps the audience indicate the characters attitude towards what is going on in the screen. E.g. When Whoopi Goldberg is puzzled with what was going on when she was in the air; her facial expression is the factor which tells the audience that what she is experiencing isn't what she planned for. The audience on the screen/scene at this point isn't aware of that but we are informed through her expression. This is a great way to connect the audience to the character. The places shown throughout the first minute of the opening scene keeps the audience interested as they are paranoid to find out what is going on and why the places are being shown. The flashing lights demands the audience attention and keep the audience attentiveness fully on the screen.  The titles are placed in the right hand side of the screen but “Whoopi Goldberg” being the main character’s name appears in the middle of the screen to show the audience she is the main role. The music and dancing that goes on in the opening sequences keeps the audience entertain and gives them a taste of what they are to look out for.

When the song is performed on stage in the opening sequence, the location is used is to tell the audience the kind of personality that the character has and creates a friendly atmosphere due to the response of the audience in the scene. The audience laughing and clapping shows they are being entertained. The movie was produced clearly with the audience in mind as it includes factors that people expect when watching a movie.
